James Cole might have a rival for his role as CEO of Panache Cruises – his 17-year-old son Charlie.

The Chorley-based company reported a record-breaking turnover in 2024 of more than £25m and wants to train 100 apprentices by 2030.

They include the founder’s 17-year-old son Charlie, who has just celebrated his 12-month anniversary at the luxury cruise retailer.

James Cole explained: “We’ve always been passionate about apprentices but the ultimate test came when my son Charlie asked if he could join the business as an apprentice.

“He was only 16 and had just started his A-levels and my initial thought was I wanted him to finish his studies.

“However, he came in for a fortnight’s work experience and never looked back.

“He works as a partnership junior and is involved in everything from updating the website, social media and marketing.

“My only gripe is that he refuses to eat lunch with me!”

Luxury cruise retailer’s record start to 2025

Charlie Cole hadn’t considered an apprenticeship until he did a work placement at Panache and really enjoyed it.

“I’d just finished my GCSEs but I wasn’t enjoying my A-levels,” he said.

“I remember the weekend before I was due to go back to school  and I said to my Dad ‘I don’t want to go back, I want to work’.

“Dad asked me to finish the term off to see if I changed my mind but I knew what I wanted.”

As part of his apprenticeship he works with a training provider called A S Training.

“I have an online tutor once a month and get set tasks to complete throughout the month,” he explained.

“I know I’m the founder’s son but I’m trying to create my own personality that is separate to him.

“My long-term aim is to run my own business – if I don’t take over Panache Cruises first!”
