Personal safety app Flare has introduced a ‘Live Share’ safety feature.

Flare, which featured in fourth spot on our TransportTech 50 ranking, is an app used by cyclists and other road users.

Working with the sensors in their smartphone phone, it can detect if there is a likelihood that a user has been involved in an incident. The app then begins a 30-second countdown: if there is no movement or response from the user, their exact location is sent to emergency contacts, using What3Words, so help can arrive quickly.

Its latest feature aims to increase the safety of family and friends by allowing them to share their real-time location and safety status with trusted contacts.

If a user is on a night out with friends or exploring the countryside, it can help provide peace of mind.

The startup says it has also made it easier for event organisers and clubs to temporarily share their status with other members to ensure no one is ever left behind.

“Live Share represents a significant expansion of our already award-winning safety platform Flare,” said co-founder and chief technical officer Kirk Ryan.

“Having recently had a family member jumped in town, the first things I wanted to know were: ‘Is he OK?’ and ‘Where is he now?’

“Today, Flare can answer those questions and more importantly, alert the whole family in real-time at the moment he was attacked so that we could have a clearer understanding of the timings and locations when talking to the police.”

Live Share is now available within the latest version of Flare 4.2.0 and the company is making it free for everyone to try for a limited time only, after which it will become a premium user feature.
