BusinessCloud can reveal its SportTech 50 innovation ranking for 2021. 

Readers of the online technology publication and an independent judging panel have together decided the 50 companies blazing a technology trail in the sports industry.

The SportTech 50 celebrates businesses of all sizes creating original tech for sports and fitness performance, consumption and administration.

Tappit, a cashless payment systems for sporting events based in Leeds, tops the ranking.

In second spot is Incisiv Sport, a Belfast-based neurotechnology start-up.

The company uses cutting-edge science to develop technologies that advance human performance, for example helping goalkeepers pull off match-winning saves and transforming the rehabilitation journey for athletes.

Edinburgh-headquartered Fanbase, a developer of apps to connect sports clubs with fans, was third ahead of fan engagement platform Sport Buff (Lambeth) and driving range tech firm Inrange Golf (Cambridge).

Making up the top 10 are Stadion (Islington), Recast (Edinburgh), Filmily (Totnes), Hawk-Eye (Basingstoke) and Genius Sports (Camden).

Sheffield-based Coordinate Sport, a platform allowing sports businesses to streamline operations and administer them all in one place, made the top 15.

BusinessCloud called on its readers to vote for companies from the 90-strong shortlist and saw more than 500 votes pour in.   

A combination of these votes and choices from an independent judging panel determined the top 50. 

The judging panel was comprised of:

  • Tash Carpenter, director of communications, English Institute of Sport
  • Dr Jon Roberts, head of sports technology research group, Sports Technology Institute, Loughborough University
