AI-driven medical app Ada secures €40m

Health tech start-up Ada Health, which is behind an artificial intelligence-driven medical app that can diagnose symptoms, has raised €40m in funding from a group of investors.

Ada has become one of the world’s fastest-growing medical apps, combining AI with the medical insights of doctors to help people understand and manage their health.

Much like a doctor, the app asks relevant, personalised questions based on the information provided and suggests possible causes for symptoms. More than 1.5 million people have used Ada, which is available on iOS and Android, since its launch in late 2016.

“The future of healthcare lies in a much more patient-centric model where individuals have actionable insights at their fingertips, and doctors and artificial intelligence work together to support patients throughout their healthcare journey,” said Ada Health co-founder and chief executive Daniel Nathrath.

“We’ve seen incredible traction since launch, receiving countless messages each day about how we’ve helped someone identify an important health issue and get to the right next step in their care. This is just the beginning, and we’re excited to enable even more people around the world to effectively manage their health.”

The €40m funding round was led by global investment group Access Industries, with participation from tech investor June Fund, whose backers include Google’s chief business officer Philipp Schindler; as well as Berlin-based Cumberland VC.

William Tunstall-Pedoe, the AI entrepreneur behind Amazon Alexa, also participated in this round, as did existing backers.

The new funds will be used to strengthen Ada’s operations, service offering and for further product development. This will include opening a new office in the US and expanding its team of engineers, scientists and medical advisers.

It currently operates from offices in Berlin and London.
