At the earliest stage, investors are backing people as much as the business itself. Ideas evolve, markets shift and products pivot but strong founders consistently find a way forward.
For me, the founders who stand out combine resilience, self-awareness and a genuine obsession with solving the problem they’ve identified. I want to see someone who deeply understands their customer, can communicate their vision clearly and has the ability to execute with pace.
A well-researched market opportunity is also critical. Founders need to demonstrate not only that there is demand for what they are building, but that they truly understand the size of the opportunity, the competitive landscape and why their solution is differentiated. Investors are looking for evidence that this can become a scalable business, not just a good idea.
The ability to show scale is key. That means having a clear vision for growth, understanding how the business model expands sustainably and being able to articulate how investment will accelerate that journey. Founders who can combine ambition with commercial clarity stand out immediately.
Coachability is hugely important too. The best founders are confident enough to take feedback, ask questions and adapt quickly when needed. Investors don’t expect perfection but they do look for honesty, clarity and the ability to learn fast.
Traction matters, but traction can look different at every stage. Sometimes it’s revenue and growth; other times it’s strong customer validation, partnerships, or evidence that a founder can build momentum with limited resources. Resourcefulness goes a long way.
I’m also looking at mindset. Building a business is challenging, and early-stage investing is ultimately about backing founders who can navigate uncertainty, make decisions under pressure and continue showing up when things get difficult.
Finally, founders who understand why they’re raising investment and how they’ll use capital strategically always stand out. Investors want to see ambition, but also focus and commercial awareness.
The strongest founders don’t just pitch an exciting vision; they create confidence that they are the right person to deliver it.
