Chinese tech giant Tencent has partnered with UK healthcare company Medopad to develop medical AI.

Internet company Tencent’s AI technology will be used alongside Medopad’s mobile medical applications in a Clinical Decision Support System, online doctor consultations and medical chatbots.

AI technology brings the possibility of improving the efficiency of medical systems, significantly reducing costs and improving clinician decision-making for patients.

“The partnership with Medopad will consolidate both parties’ strength on mobile healthcare and AI technologies, thus enabling the development of AI healthcare solutions that meet strict standards,” said Ding Ke, Tencent vice president.

“[It will] improve healthcare efficiency in China, the UK and globally.”

Tencent has focused on AI technology research since 2012 and is one of the four tech companies involved in building China’s National AI Open Innovation Platform, whose remit is to internationalise and ultimately export these capabilities overseas.

London-based Medopad provides mobile patient monitoring and engagement solutions for hospitals, pharmaceutical companies, insurance companies and governments.

Its co-founder and CEO Dan Vahdat commented: “We are delighted to be working with Tencent and bringing our clinical expertise from the UK to collaborate on innovative patient-led solutions.

“AI can help extend the clinical know-how developed in leading British NHS teaching hospitals impacting the lives of patients in the UK, China and globally.”
