Sales and operations planning (S&OP) sets an aggregate plan over the planning horizon. Sales and operations execution (S&OE) is the near-term process that turns that plan into the orders, sequences and promises the plant works to in the weeks and days that follow. The difficulty is not that the two are different processes. It is what happens when the aggregate plan cannot be translated into an executable plant schedule and updated when conditions change. That gap can show up as excess inventory, missed delivery dates and a loss of confidence in the plan.

What is the difference between S&OP and S&OE?

S&OP aligns aggregate demand, supply and inventory decisions over the planning horizon, usually monthly and by product family. S&OE translates those decisions into near-term operational actions and schedules, usually weekly and daily and at item and plant level. In manufacturing, that means the S&OP plan has to remain connected to what the plant can actually schedule and execute.

Why does S&OP alone leave a gap?

An aggregate plan cannot by itself determine the detailed sequence of production when orders, supply or shop-floor conditions change. Can the system promise orders against the production plan?

Can execution changes feed back into scheduling?

Downtime, completions and work-in-progress change what the plant can do next. Ask how those events reach the schedule, and whether that path involves a manual step.
