UK founders are moving their business to Dubai for lower taxes, 100% foreign ownership, long-term residence visas, access to wider markets and a run of UK tax rises since 2025. The move only works when it is genuine: UK tax rules still apply to anyone who stays UK resident.
Why are UK founders moving their business to Dubai?
The short answer is the tax gap. The UAE has no personal income tax law covering individuals’ income (Deloitte, UAE Business 101, 2026). Its corporate tax is 0% on taxable income up to AED 375,000 and 9% above that (UAE Ministry of Finance, via u.ae). In the UK, founders face a 25% main corporation tax rate and higher dividend and capital gains rates than a few years ago (GOV.UK).
Founders also cite:
· Ownership: full foreign ownership without a local partner.
· Residency: visas that let the whole family relocate.
· Market access: a base for Gulf, Asian and African customers.
How does UAE tax compare with UK tax?
Headline rates for 2026/27 (UK income tax rates apply in England, Wales and Northern Ireland):
*Personal-level figures assume you are no longer UK tax resident. UAE corporate tax still applies at company level.
Free zone companies are not automatically tax-free. A Qualifying Free Zone Person pays 0% only on qualifying income and 9% on non-qualifying income, subject to conditions such as adequate substance and audited accounts (Federal Tax Authority).
What has changed in UK tax since 2025?
Several UK changes have widened the gap for owner-managers. All are published on GOV.UK:
· Employer National Insurance rose from 13.8% to 15% on 6 April 2025, and the threshold at which employers start paying fell from £9,100 to £5,000 a year.
· Non-dom rules: the remittance basis for non-domiciled residents was abolished from 6 April 2025 and replaced with a four-year foreign income and gains regime.
· Business Asset Disposal Relief rose from 10% to 14% in April 2025, and to 18% from 6 April 2026.
· Dividend tax: the ordinary and upper rates rose by two percentage points from 6 April 2026, to 10.75% and 35.75%.
Can British founders own 100% of a Dubai company?
Yes. Free zone companies can be wholly foreign-owned. Since Federal Decree-Law No. 32 of 2021, most mainland activities also allow full foreign ownership, though some strategic activities are restricted (u.ae).
A free zone suits founders who serve international or UK clients. A Business Setup In Dubai Free Zone at Dubai South Business Hub starts from AED 12,500 a year, including a flexi-desk.
How do UAE visas help founders relocate?
Founders usually start with an investor (partner) residence visa sponsored by their own company. The UAE also offers longer-term routes (u.ae):
· Green Visa: a renewable 5-year residence visa for investors and business partners, with no employer sponsor needed.
· Golden Visa: lasts 5 or 10 years, depending on category. The investor route requires at least AED 2 million of capital.
Both routes allow family members to be sponsored.
Does Dubai give UK businesses better market access?
Yes. UK–UAE trade in goods and services was £25.2 billion in the four quarters to the end of Q1 2026, up 3.9% on the year before (UK trade and investment factsheet, September 2026). The UK concluded a free trade deal with the Gulf Cooperation Council on 20 May 2026. It had not yet been confirmed as in force when this article was written (GOV.UK).
For trading and logistics firms, Dubai South Business Hub sits next to Al Maktoum International Airport, with access to Jebel Ali Port and Etihad Rail.
What are the trade-offs?
The main risks sit on the UK side.
· UK residence: HMRC’s Statutory Residence Test decides your status each tax year. You are usually non-resident if you spend fewer than 16 days in the UK, or 46 days if you were not UK resident in the previous three tax years.
· Company residence: a Dubai company whose central management and control is in the UK can be UK tax resident.
· CFC rules: these may apply if your UK limited company owns the Dubai company.
· Returning early: under the temporary non-residence rules, some gains and income can be taxed if you come back within five years.
· Corporate tax registration: new UAE companies must register within three months. Late registration carries an AED 10,000 penalty.
· Documents: the UAE is not a party to the Hague Apostille Convention. UK documents need an FCDO apostille and then UAE Embassy attestation.

Is moving your business to Dubai right for you?
It usually makes sense if your clients are international, you will genuinely live in the UAE, and your company will have real substance in Dubai, with decisions made there.
If your customers stay in the UK, a separate second company may fit better.
