A Bristol-based robotics startup has unveiled a new education app for its programmable robot.

Reach Robotics’ four-legged robot ‘MekaMon’ already comes with an app for gaming.

The startup is now planning an accompanying education app, Reach EDU, for the first quarter of 2019.

The platform will make use MekaMon’s movement and, in the future, its augmented reality capabilities to teach students.

For students at degree level and above, third-party educational platforms will also be made available with the robot for advanced development.

Nigerian tech entrepreneur and founding CEO Silas Adekunle said: “There’s a huge amount of creative potential with MekaMon, due to the scope of its expressive movement and personality.

“Reach EDU is about delivering the tools for students to take advantage of this, by creating a versatile, accessible, and fun platform for effective STEAM education and ongoing innovation.

“The World Economic Forum recently listed problem-solving, critical thinking, creativity as the top three skills that children need for success. We firmly believe that we can deliver on all of these fronts.

“Taking into account that an estimated 85 per cent of jobs that will exist in 2030 are as yet undefined–we think it is essential that the next generation are fully literate in the STEAM skills that will equip them for a post-4th industrial revolution economy.”

Adekunle told BusinessCloud last year that he hopes deal with Apple and Amazon will help the company to become the world’s leading consumer robotics company.
