Manchester-based unicorn Matillion has appointed former Google and Microsoft executive Frank Weigel as its chief of product (CPO).
The Manchester-headquartered intelligent data integration platform achieved unicorn status in 2021 when a $150m Series E round valued the firm at $1.5bn.
Experienced Weigel previously worked as VP at Microsoft and a VP/general manager for Google’s Google Cloud Business Application Platform.
The University of Manchester graduate started his career at Transitive, which was acquired by IBM, rising up the ranks before joining Couchbase.
He spent three years there, becoming a VP before moving to Microsoft and then Google.

Weigel said: “After two decades gaining experience across both Silicon Valley startups and Big Tech, I am eager to bring that perspective to further establish the data productivity cloud as the most intuitive and effective data integration platform for the AI era.
“Recognising that enterprise AI relies critically on accessible internal data, I’m thrilled by the opportunity to empower humans and AI agents to gather and transform the data they need – both with AI-driven tools and for their AI initiatives.”
Matillion, which relocated its office to a new 28,000 sq ft space HQ at Two New Bailey in 2023, was founded by Matthew Scullion and Ed Thompson in 2011.
The duo appeared on BusinessCloud’s Northern Leaders 2024 list and Scullion was a headline speaker at the GM Rising Stars of Business launch event at the beginning of May.
Scullion: “I am delighted to welcome Frank Weigel to the Matillion executive team. As enterprises urgently demand exponential growth of their data, data integration needs to evolve and take advantage of the AI opportunity to achieve that scale.
“With his domain experience and years at the heart of Silicon Valley, Frank is perfectly placed to shape the data productivity cloud to meet these ever-growing and evolving needs.”
