The UK tops the list with 392,627 new start-ups registered in the five-year period, followed by  France and then Italy.

  • France 323,987
  • Italy 314,894

  • Netherlands 176,964
  • Spain 171,629
  • Turkey 119,766
  • Czech Republic 75,476
  • Portugal 71,623

While the UK dominates the tech sector, the wholesale and retail sectors have the largest presence across Europe with 3.7 million new businesses started up.

“It’s interesting to see that the UK ranks among the top five countries with the highest numbers of registered new businesses,” said Guy Moreve, chief marketing officer at Paymentsense, which carried out the research.

“It shows that the country offers a great setting for those interested in founding their own company.

“Further afield, it’s fascinating to see how Europe has changed in recent times.

“A number of countries are now placing more emphasis on technology which has helped create a ‘golden era’ for tech start-ups.”
