Pie recipes created by AI chef revealed

NatWest backed digital lending platform Esme Loans has collaborated with a Worthing-based bakery to make a pie recipe using GPT2, the language model developed by Open AI.

The FinTech firm collaborated with multi-award winning pie maker Piglets Pantry in Sussex to find out if artificial intelligence (AI) can be used to create a pie.

In an effort to demystify the technology, Esme Loans used the language model developed by Open AI, which generates human-readable synthetic text.

The model was trained on nearly a million characters of UK specific pie recipes and cooking instructions, and the recipes were then refined by a human to create:

  • Veggie spiral pie with spiced tomato sauce & chopped salad
  • Scotch egg pie
  • Curried chicken pie
  • Pear & blackberry crostata
  • Gluten-free curried veg pie

Veronika Lovett, Co-founder and CMO of Esme Loans, said: “It’s a really exciting time for SMEs and scale-ups with AI coming into the workspace – it opens many opportunities to gain a competitive advantage

“Any business with intentions of scaling should be having discussions around how Machine Learning and AI could be used to help them succeed. We have demonstrated this is within reach of SMEs, and is not just big tech firms. Working closely with Piglets to use the most cutting edge open-source AI tech available and implement that in their new product development process.

“The speed and the volume of results we were able to deliver were outstanding. Joanna was extremely excited as the suggestions from the AI model were usable and relevant.”
