Grand Theft Auto VI has been delayed until 26th May 2026 in a blow to the UK games industry.

Secretive Scottish developer Rockstar Games apologised for the latest delay to one of the most highly anticipated games of all time. 

It’s already been a dozen years since the last original game in its blockbuster franchise. GTA V has sold 210m copies.

GTA VI had been scheduled for release this autumn.

“We are very sorry that this is later than you expected. The interest and excitement surrounding a new Grand Theft Auto has been truly humbling for our entire team,” it stated in a short post on its website. 

“We want to thank you for your support and your patience as we work to finish the game.

“With every game we have released, the goal has always been to try and exceed your expectations, and Grand Theft Auto VI is no exception. 

“We hope you understand that we need this extra time to deliver at the level of quality you expect and deserve.”

The games industry has hotly anticipated GTA VI since the release of a trailer video in December 2023 which showed it is to be set in Vice City – a fictional Miami which was the backdrop to one of the seminal games in the PS2 era.

Rockstar’s parent company Take-Two is due to report its financial results on 15th May 2025.
