The cryptocurrency market crashed in the last few hours after Vladimir Putin seemed to declare war on Ukraine.

Geopolitical tensions have been high for weeks as the Russia President massed troops on the border between the countries.

With a full-scale invasion now seemingly underway, the recovery enjoyed by coins in the previous 24-hour period has been wiped out and then some.

Ukraine described the military operations as a “full-scale invasion” while US President Biden said: “President Putin has chosen a premeditated war that will bring a catastrophic loss of life and human suffering. The world will hold Russia accountable.”

At the time of writing on Thursday (7am UK), many of the leading coins had suffered falls of around 15% in 24 hours.

Among them were Cardano (ADA) and Avalanche (AVAX), which have yo-yoed in recent days. Investors will hope that the latest fall will not be prolonged by the world crisis.

ADA is headed towards 77 cents, down 28% over seven days, while AVAX is at $66.17, down 30% in a week.

Meme coin Dogecoin (DOGE) also lost around 15% and is now a little over 11c, down 25% in a week.

Ethereum (ETH), the world’s second most valuable coin, was one of several coins to lose 12% and is now below $2,350. ETH is 24% down on its price a week ago.

Binance Coin (BNB) also shed 12% to $330, 23% down over seven days, while Ripple’s (XRP) own loss leaves it at 63c, 24% down in a week.

Polkadot (DOT) also lost 12%, standing at $14.49 with a seven-day price fall of 26%.

Solana (SOL) dropped 9% to $81 and is 19% down on its price last Thursday morning.

Market leader Bitcoin (BTC) shed 8% to below $34,850 and is 21% down in a week.

Terra (LUNA), who had enjoyed the biggest gains among the majors in the previous 24-hour period – adding 13% – also fared the best from Wednesday into Thursday, losing 7% to stand at $52.31. It remains 7% down over seven days.
