Apple moves for UK camera AI company

Technology

Silicon Valley giant Apple has moved to acquire UK-based camera AI start-up Spectral Edge.

The Cambridge-based company spun out of the University of East Anglia in 2014 and raised $5.3 million funding last year.

Its algorithm can make low-light smartphone images more crisp and incorporate more accurate colours by blending data from a standard lens and an infrared lens.

It could lead to improved photos taken on iPhones. Apple is already planning to add a 3D camera to iPhones next year for improved depth sensing and augmented reality.

Apple corporate lawyer Peter Denwood has been named a director of the firm while its existing advisers and board members have been terminated.

The deal was for an undisclosed sum.
