Budget: Founders’ Relief a ‘shot of adrenaline’ for entrepreneurs

The business ecosystem has backed the announcement of a Founders’ Relief initiative in today’s Budget.

John Healey delivered his first fiscal plan as Chancellor alongside Prime Minister Andy Burnham and the capital gains tax relief stole headlines among businesses and those who support them.

The relief will apply a 10% rate of CGT to qualifying disposals of shares, up to a lifetime limit of £10 million of gains per individual.

The Government said this will incentivise those whose records, creativity and resilience in building successful businesses mean they have the potential to deliver even more UK jobs, growth and wider economic benefits in future.

It has launched a consultation seeking views on how the proposed individual, company and growth and innovation conditions will work for this in practice.

Will today’s Budget back UK’s risk-taking entrepreneurs?

Tech entrepreneurs have called for the Chancellor to “change Britain’s ambition and appetite for risk” in his first Budget today.

In a video address ahead of the unveiling of his first fiscal plan alongside Prime Minister Andy Burham, John Healey pledged to provide “breathing space” to businesses and households.

He also promised to deliver long-term measures to “get energy costs down for good” and to “strengthen national security and our defences”.

“We’ll do all of this responsibly, sticking within tight fiscal rules, and make sure every pound is well invested,” he said.

However Steven Mendel and Laura Ashford, co-founders of Lateral – a private health insurance startup for active over-60s – want to see a more radical plan to back entrepreneurs.

“The Chancellor talks about backing entrepreneurs, but I’d like to know whether this Budget has done anything meaningful to change Britain’s ambition and appetite for risk,” they said.

“We’re asking people to take enormous personal and financial risks to build the businesses that will drive our future growth. Yet too often the incentives facing those same people seem designed to encourage them to work less, earn less and play it safe.”

Machenta, building frontier AI for robots, raises £30m

Published: October 27, 2026 at 12:10 pm

Machenta, a frontier AI company building a new kind of foundation model for robots, has raised a £30 million seed round co-led by Creandum and Union Square Ventures.

People are remarkably good at learning new physical tasks: show someone how to do something once and, in many cases, they can do it straight away. However, robots today are very different, and teaching them a new task usually takes several days or weeks.

First, hundreds or thousands of human demonstrations of the task are collected, then the model is trained on this data, and finally after waiting for all this, the robot can perform the task by itself.

Machenta has built a foundational model designed to eliminate that intelligence gap between humans and robots, and to achieve ‘instant learning’.

Utilising this model, the firm says, if a robot sees just one demonstration of a task, it can perform the task immediately afterwards – instantly adapting to entirely new variations of the task. There is no need to wait for further demonstrations or training.

This month Brave Bison made a fifth and final offer valued at £53.4 million, using its own criteria, but it failed to attract sufficient support among shareholders of System1.

The offer was equivalent to 10.7x of System1’s forecasted FY27 adjusted profit before tax of £5m, Brave Bison said. It has now lapsed, having failed to satisfy the acceptance condition. Accordingly, System1 is no longer in an offer period for the purposes of the Takeover Code.
