Mark Hughes MBE has announced he is stepping down as CEO of The Growth Company following a period of ill health.
Hughes, who has led the organisation for 13 years, said the decision followed a period of reflection as he recovers from illness.
He previously served as chief executive of the North West Regional Development Agency and was awarded an MBE in recognition of his services to business in the North West.
The Growth Company plays a key role in driving economic growth, supporting businesses and creating jobs.
Hughes was included in BusinessCloud’s 2026 Northern Leaders list in recognition of his contribution to the region.
Writing on LinkedIn this morning, he said: “After a period of ill-health – and now thankfully on the mend – I’ve had the chance to pause and reflect on my priorities.
“That reflection has led me to make the difficult decision to step down as CEO of The Growth Company.
“Leading The Growth Company for 13 years has been one of the greatest privileges of my career. Being appointed to help shape a new organisation for Greater Manchester’s devolution journey was a defining moment. What followed has been extraordinary.
“Together, we built the UK’s leading Business Growth Hub. We expanded our services nationally. We supported thousands of businesses and residents every year. We stepped up during moments of crisis, including the pandemic and supporting Ukrainian evacuees.
“And we proved that a values-driven social enterprise can sustainably deliver real, lasting impact.
“But the real legacy lies in the people. The Growth Company is full of talented, committed individuals who care deeply about doing the right thing and making a positive difference. Working alongside them has been a privilege.
“I’m now focusing on my recovery and spending time with my family. The Growth Company is in excellent hands with Donna Edwards whilst they appoint my permanent replacement and the longstanding senior management team continuing to deliver our ambitious corporate plan.
“Thank you to everyone who has been part of this journey. I’m proud of what we built, and excited to see what The Growth Company achieves next.”
Simon Donohue was among those to pay tribute.
He said: “You’ve achieved amazing things and it was a privilege to work with you in some small way during my time at Marketing Manchester and The Growth Company. All the best for your continued recovery and whatever you do next.”
