Monzo co-founder Tom Blomfield has joined the compute team at Claude’s parent company Anthropic.
Blomfield, 40, has taken a leave of absence from the prestigious US accelerator Y Combinator – which he joined as a partner in 2023 – to move to the generative AI giant.
Anthropic closed a $65 billion Series H funding round in May 2026 which valued the company at $965 billion, more than ChatGPT’s parent company OpenAI. It is preparing for an IPO later this year.
Blomfield, who previously co-founded GoCardless – set to be sold to Dutch FinTech Mollie for €1.05 billion – co-founded digital bank Monzo in 2015 and grew it into one of the UK’s most valuable software companies.
He transitioned from CEO to president in 2020 and left Monzo – which now has 10.4 million customers and is preparing for an IPO itself – in 2021. He has spoken openly about the toll that running the business through the COVID pandemic took on his mental health.
Blomfield revealed that he will join the compute team at Anthropic – which is responsible for the hardware, software and data centre infrastructure required to train and run AI models – on X.
“Powerful AI has the potential to improve the life of every human on Earth and, as we enter the early stages of recursive self-improvement, availability of compute becomes one of the most important issues to solve. I’m excited to get started,” he wrote.
He will work alongside Tom Brown, Anthropic’s co-founder and chief compute officer.
Former Prime Minister Rishi Sunak joined Anthropic as an adviser last year.
Blomfield has written in the past that software engineers’ days may be numbered given the increasing capability of AI chatbots.
He blogged: “I’m extremely hopeful for the future. I think we may be able to cure basically every known disease. We may dramatically extend the human lifespan. This future could be very positive for humanity.
“I’m also extremely worried. I think the short-term impact on hundreds of millions of people is going to be very profound, and I don’t think many people are prepared.”
