Greater Manchester-based Squosh Compacting is set to scale its waste management technology.
The tech cuts carbon emissions, reduces costs and boosts recycling rates for businesses and public sector organisations.
Its service mounts compactors directly onto collection vehicles, increasing bin capacity by at least 50%, reducing collection frequency and delivering significant carbon savings for clients.
With tailored support from Green Economy – part of The Growth Company – Squosh has validated its carbon-saving credentials, secured funding to develop a fully operational electric mobile compactor powered by high-performance lithium batteries, and designed a scalable franchise model for third-party haulers.
These developments position Squosh as a first mover in low-carbon waste technology and a key player in the region’s green economy. Alongside this, Squosh also benefited from early-stage business advice through the EnterprisingYou programme in 2024, receiving guidance on franchising to support its growth plans.
The impact of this innovation is already clear. Each compactor eliminates one collection trip per week, reducing emissions by an estimated 20 tonnes per unit annually. For clients, this means fewer journeys, lower fuel costs, and improved recycling rates thanks to bin decontamination during compaction. Squosh is also intercepting items destined for landfill and redistributing them for reuse, helping businesses meet sustainability targets while rethinking what gets thrown away.
Economic growth is following environmental impact. The company is forecasting turnover to rise from £160,000 to £830,000 within three years, supported by new contracts with two NHS trusts and three local authorities. Two new jobs have already been created, with eight more in the pipeline as the franchise model scales nationally.
Founder Eric McBean said: “We were confident that we had an innovative product and a receptive market, but with so many potential audiences it was difficult to know what to prioritise to ensure the best return on investment. This was why working with Green Economy was so important, giving us space to talk through our options and progress as effectively as possible.”
Amy House, Director at Green Economy, added: “Squosh Compacting is a fantastic example of how green innovation drives both environmental and commercial success. By reducing carbon emissions and cutting operational costs for clients, they’ve created a solution that meets sustainability goals while unlocking new revenue streams. This kind of forward-thinking approach strengthens Greater Manchester’s position as a leader in the low-carbon economy.”
With a franchise rollout planned for 2026, Squosh aims to scale nationally, supporting haulers and businesses to cut costs and achieve net-zero goals.
