A startup that harnesses the power of AI to deliver human-led training has announced a major contract win.
OpenRain was founded by serial entrepreneur Andy Lord and combines artificial intelligence with the knowledge, experience, and mentorship of expert trainers.
The startup has offices in Cardiff and Manchester and has been awarded a contract under the Swansea Bay City Deal’s Skills and Talent Programme, in partnership with the Regional Learning and Skills Partnership (RLSP).
The project aims to upskill over 400 professionals across South West Wales over a 12-month period, delivering innovative, industry-aligned training focused on IT qualifications with healthcare and indoor environmental quality (IEQ) primarily within the construction industry.
The training will combine real-world, employer-led learning with the latest advancements in AI-powered training delivery.
This includes the use of digital tutors, immersive learning environments, and contextualised case studies designed to drive meaningful outcomes for learners and their employers.
Jane Lewis, regional partnership manager at RLSP and project lead on the Skills and Talent Programme, said: “This initiative is a prime example of how innovation in education can drive regional growth.
“OpenRain’s proposal stood out for its ability to blend AI with real-world workforce needs, particularly in key growth sectors like health and wellbeing.”
The project directly contributes to the Swansea Bay City Deal’s mission of delivering high-value skills in areas such as digital innovation, smart manufacturing, and health and wellbeing. It aligns with the RLSP’s vision of shaping a skilled, resilient, and future-ready workforce for the region.
Andy Lord, CEO of OpenRain, said: “We are thrilled to work alongside RLSP and the City Deal to empower over 400 individuals through future-focused training.
“By integrating AI and environmental standards into qualifications, we’re not only addressing critical skills gaps but helping people thrive in a rapidly evolving job market.”
This initiative is funded as part of the Swansea Bay City Deal – a major investment programme with a total value of £1.3bn, aimed at transforming the Swansea Bay City Region.
The Swansea Bay City Deal is jointly funded by the UK Government, the Welsh Government, the public sector, and the private sector.
