Industrial services provider Bilfinger has acquired Ellesmere Port-based nZero Group, including the two subsidiaries Orbital Gas Systems Ltd. and Thyson Technology Ltd.
The transaction also comprises nZero’s locations in Staffordshire and Bristol.
With around 240 employees, the firm specialises in advanced energy systems and gas technologies and the acquisition will allow Germany-based Bilfinger to expand its footprint in the UK gas and hydrogen sectors.
It also marks NVM Private Equity’s exit from nZero, concluding a partnership that positioned nZero as a key player in the UK’s transition to a net zero economy and delivering a 2.6x return for the fund.
The nZero Group has positioned itself as a significant player in the industry, evidenced by its 2024 revenues of approximately £30m.
“We are looking forward to welcoming the talented nZero team to Bilfinger,” said Sandy Bonner, president engineering and maintenance UK at Bilfinger.
“This acquisition not only enhances our technological capabilities but also strengthens our commitment to the UK market.
“By leveraging the combined excellence of both teams, we will deliver innovative solutions tailored to the UK’s specific needs. We will be perfectly equipped to support the process industry in meeting the government’s ‘net zero by 2050’ target.”
Matt Allen, managing director of nZero Group, added: “We are excited to become part of Bilfinger and their journey to drive innovation and sustainability with combined forces.
“The integration will facilitate knowledge sharing and enhance each other’s skills, as Bilfinger and nZero share their strong commitment to employee growth and development.”
The transaction was closed with immediate effect after signing on May 12th and the integration phase commences right away and is expected to last up to 12 months.
Andy Leach, investment partner at NVM, said: “We are proud to have supported the nZero team as they have evolved into a highly respected partner in the energy transition space.
“Their contribution to the UK net zero agenda, particularly through hydrogen and biogas projects, has been impressive and aligns with the type of impactful, sustainable growth NVM is keen to support.
“The acquisition by Bilfinger will provide a strong platform for continued innovation and expansion and we wish Matt and the team well in their future growth plans.”
