Play XD has received a £100,000 investment to support its growth as it develops its latest gaming title with tech giant Meta.

The funding comes from NPIF II – River Capital & GC Business Finance Smaller Loans as part of the Northern Powerhouse Investment Fund II.

The Chorley-based business is in the process of readying its new virtual reality game Primal Rumble, which is scheduled to launch on the Meta Quest platform in 2026.

The investment will also support the creation of nine new jobs in the area and help the company to deliver on its growth plans.

“This NPIF II investment from River Capital comes at a crucial time in our growth journey,” said Phil Goddard, founder and creative director of Play XD.

“With Meta’s backing and now River Capital’s support, we’re well-positioned to expand our team and deliver an exceptional gaming experience to a global audience while keeping our roots firmly in Lancashire.”

Jonathan Nelson, investment manager at River Capital, added: “Play XD represents the kind of innovative, forward-thinking company we’re excited to support.

“Their successful track record, combined with their recent Meta partnership, showcases the high-calibre tech talent we have in the North.

“This investment will help them capitalise on a significant market opportunity while creating skilled jobs in the region.”

The £660m NPIF II provides loans across the North of England between £25,000 and £2m and equity investment up to £5m to help small and medium businesses scale up or stay ahead.

In January 2025, it announced that it had already invested £50m within its first 10 months of launching.
