Ask for help over GDPR

Technology

The General Data Protection Regulation has been described as the most significant overhaul in data protection in a generation.

Statistics suggest that the majority of organisations are still not prepared despite the prospect of irreparable reputational damage and being fined €20m or four per cent of worldwide annual turnover if they do not comply.

Chris Hunter, creative director at Preston-based telecoms service provider HM Network, says every department in a business needs to take ownership of GDPR. You may also have to look outside the company for help.

“Work with partners,” he says. “If you can’t do certain things in-house, find people that can help you. It doesn’t have to cost the earth.

“We’ve put a lot of free guidance out there and there are lots of free seminars but we’ve also worked with professionals who we’ve had to pay for.

“You wouldn’t try and self-serve legal advice, you’d go to a solicitor for certain things. Ask for help when you need it.”
