Dutch FinTech Mollie has completed its €1.1 billion acquisition of UK rival GoCardless.

When originally announcing the deal in December 2025, the firms said that more than 90% of the consideration will be paid in shares, with the remainder in cash.

The figure is around half the valuation achieved by payments platform GoCardless in its latest funding round in 2022, which featured Balderton Capital, BlackRock and Permira.

GoCardless was founded by CEO Hiroki Takeuchi (pictured), Monzo co-founder Tom Blomfield and Matt Robinson in 2011. A few years later Takeuchi, its chief executive, was paralysed from the chest down following a cycle crash.

In the year ending June 2025, its last published accounts, it narrowed losses before tax to £24.2m, and recently posted its first profitable quarter. This followed a series of cutbacks. Meanwhile Mollie achieved EBITDA profitability in 2024 and reported €147 million in net revenue in 2025.

The deal creates Europe’s leading payments and financial services partner, with more than 350,000 business customers across 30+ markets.

Koen Köppen, CEO of Mollie, will lead the group. GoCardless will continue to operate as ‘GoCardless, a Mollie company’ under Takeuchi.

Mollie now brings payments, accounts and business financing into one financial home, with one partner behind them.

At its heart is a comprehensive payment suite that unites Mollie’s card and local payment methods with GoCardless’s ‘Pay by Bank’ solution, available across 38 countries.

“This is more than two companies coming together. It genuinely expands what our customers can do,” said Köppen. “Two complementary businesses, the same DNA, and a shared mission to make money management effortless. Our customers now have one financial partner scaling with their ambition.”

Mollie has teams on the ground in 12 cities across the European Economic Area. GoCardless brings the group an established presence in the United States, Canada, Australia and New Zealand.

Takeuchi added: “This acquisition is a major milestone for GoCardless. When we started in 2011, everyone was building on cards and bank payments took a backseat.

“We backed our belief that it’s the best way to get paid – and spent 15 years proving it. It’s been a great journey so far, but I’m most excited about what comes next.

“By combining with Mollie, we can now bring over a decade of bank payment expertise to a far wider range of businesses. Together, we’re building a platform that covers online and in-person payments, accounts and business financing, giving customers a single, stronger financial partner across Europe and beyond.”
