Video game company GAME Digital has sold its Multiplay Digital business in a deal worth £19m.

Multiplay (UK), which owns Multiplay Digital, is an online game server-hosting business for game developers, which also provides a direct business to consumer (B2C) game hosting service.

GAME Digital, which is listed on the London Stock Exchange and owns high street retailer GAME, has entered into an agreement to sell Multiplay (UK) to Unity Technologies APS.

The move follows the Hampshire-headquartered group’s decision to evaluate the strategic options for its digital activities.

“This transaction is a significant strategic step forward for GAME Digital,” said chief executive Martyn Gibbs.

“By divesting Multiplay Digital we simplify the group and focus management on accelerating development plans to fully capitalise on the strong growth potential in our exciting and growing esports activities, including BELONG.

“We now look forward to further developing GAME Digital as we seek to combine multichannel retail, events and esports.

“We are delighted to have transacted with such a strong new owner for our Multiplay Digital business and its highly talented team.”

Multiplay (UK) previously consisted of two businesses, Digital and Esports & Events. On 31 October 2017, the latter was transferred to another wholly owned subsidiary of the group.

In a London Stock Exchange statement, GAME Digital said it remains committed to the ownership and continued development of the Esports & Events business.
