UK-based digital bank Monzo has named AJ Coyne as its first chief marketing officer.
The UK-based digital bank published its annual report earlier this week, which showed revenue had jumped 39 per cent to £1.7bn, and it now has 15.2m customers.
Coyne, who joined the FinTech in 2024, said his appointment highlights the importance of marketing to Monzo’s future.
He said: “Marketing is more than campaigns. It’s one of the ways we bring our mission to make money work for everyone to life for our customers every day.
“And because of that, it’s become a real driver of growth, creativity, culture and customer connection across the company.
“Since 2023, we’ve grown Monzo to more than 15 million customers, launched a Sunday Times bestselling book, and became the first financial services brand to win Brand of the Year at The Marketing Society. Most importantly, we’ve built a brand people genuinely care about.
“None of that happens because of one person.
“It happens because of brilliant people who care deeply about the work, each other, and building something meaningful together.
“The standards are incredibly high here, but so is the generosity, ambition and belief in what Monzo can become. That’s what makes the work special.”
Coyne, who has previously worked at Spotify and Klarna, said marketing is changing faster than at any point in his career because of the impact of AI.
“AI will reshape how brands are built, how teams operate and how creativity happens,” he explained.
“The opportunity is enormous, but so is the responsibility to help people adapt and thrive through that change.
“It also comes at a pivotal moment for Monzo. We’re entering a new chapter as we bring the brand to more people around the world, starting with Ireland and Spain.
“That makes marketing even more important, not just in helping Monzo grow, but in making sure we scale what makes people love us in the first place.
“A huge part of the role now is developing a team that can navigate all of that together.
“Keeping standards high, creating space for people to grow, and making sure Monzo continues to be a place where great marketers can do the best work of their careers.
“That’s the part I care most about.”
Monzo was founded in 2015 with a mission to become the best bank account in the world.
In August 2016, Monzo became a regulated bank and has grown to a team of more than 2,000 staff at its London HQ and working remotely around the world.
